• To add type to your illustration, select the Type tool, then click once where you want your text to go.
• The Text dialog box appears (this same box appears when selecting Type from Style menu.) Set the font style, size, and alignment of your type with the upper dialog box selections.
• You can also set "kerning",* which moves letters toward (negative numbers) or away from (positive numbers) each other.
• The empty box at the bottom is for your type... don’t forget to type text in this box before clicking OK!
• After clicking OK, your type appears on the page with a baseline and a selection point. The baseline and point can be used for alignment.

AI's "kerning" is not true kerning. Specifically, it does not use kerning pairs, so typing WAVE will not result in optimal letter spacing between the WA or the AV. AI's "kerning" should actually be called tracking, since it moves all letters in by a given amount.
